{"id":18,"date":"2007-01-31T19:54:30","date_gmt":"2007-02-01T01:54:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bigroom.org\/wordpress\/?p=18"},"modified":"2007-01-31T19:54:30","modified_gmt":"2007-02-01T01:54:30","slug":"they-did-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bigroom.org\/wordpress\/?p=18","title":{"rendered":"They did it!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to our library staff and the people at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (from whom this comes) I was able to get a copy of the original &#8220;Gram Stain&#8221; paper&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Beginning of the original Gram Stain paper\" title=\"Hans Christian Gram's 'Gram Stain' paper\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bigroom.org\/images\/gram-snap.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know whether to be annoyed (that someone else beat me to it) or happy (because now I&#8217;ll be able to double-check my translation) but it appears the <span class=\"moreinfo\" title=\"American Society for Microbiology\">ASM<\/span> actually already <a title=\"link to a .pdf of the Gram Stain paper, translated into English\" href=\"http:\/\/www.asm.org\/ASM\/files\/CCLIBRARYFILES\/FILENAME\/0000000235\/1884p215.pdf\">has a translation of the paper online<\/a>.  Interestingly, the attached commentary states that the Gram stain even works on bacterial <span class=\"moreinfo\" title=\"Bacteria that have had their hard cell walls removed but are otherwise still intact (but fragile)\">protoplasts<\/span>.  If that&#8217;s true, then all this stuff I keep getting told about the action of the Gram stain being due to the cell walls themselves is incorrect.  I wonder, do Gram-positive bacteria also have thicker inner membranes?
