I was going to call it “Oxygen Sucks”…

I mentioned I’ve been “working” (playing) with recording audio during my commute to and from work, in hopes of turning the audio into a regular podcast. I was originally going to call it “Oxygen Sucks”, which is why today’s attached/enclosed audio (only about 7 minutes long) refers to itself as such…

Officially, though, I think “Stir-Fried Random” is a better name, so I’ll go with that henceforth. The first real episode is under way already, so I could put it up as early as the next few days. Today’s episode is in mp3 format, though starting next episode I’d like to offer both mp3 and Ogg Vorbis, at least, the latter format having better audio quality at the same bitrate (and being Legally Free for use). As a bonus, I gather Firefox 3.1 should offer native playback support for it, too…

I’d appreciate commentary on the content (even if you don’t listen but merely want to comment on the show notes) and audio quality. No login needed, anonymous comments allowed.

I’d also like to stick “Easter Eggs” and useful content into subsequent audio files’ metadata (embedded show notes, geotagging marks, pictures), suggestions are welcome in this regard, too.

(Let me know if this even works…)

The Author is (currently) an autodidactic student of Industrial and Environmental microbiology, who is sick of people assuming all microbiology should be medical in nature, and who would really like to be allowed to go to graduate school one of these days now that he's finished his BS in Microbiology (with a bonus AS in Chemistry). He also enjoys exploring the Big Room (the one with the really high blue ceiling and big light that tracks from one side to the other every day) and looking at its contents from unusual mental angles.

  1. I enjoyed it. You really should clean out your car, preferably before the ants find all the goodies! Your sound was pretty good, but not even. There was one spot where it was quieter than the others. Overall enjoyable. It sounds like you are having way too much fun commuting.

  2. You might be on to something about elvis and bigfoot.

Mossad, KGB, Microsoft and the USDA are all working together?

The audio quality was pretty good, though I could clearly tell it was recorded while driving. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

  3. Thanks for the feedback – I’m still trying to work out how to improve the quality of the initial recording. I got a segment late last week that actually sounded pretty decent: I think how and where I hang/mount the microphone in the car makes a difference.

Does it make me a wierdo if I’m wondering if I could stick some of that sound-absorbing foam around the car and reduce the background noise that way?

I’m beginning to think the bigfoot/elvis thing connects to the Government Conspiracy. Bigfoot, at least – I saw that episode of “The Six Million Dollar Man”! (Okay, I was, like, ten years old or so at the time, but still…)

I should have the first proper episode out in a couple of days, I think. I’m taking topic requests, too…
